Sant Carles de la Rąpita is the
closest town to Arboleda and is less than a ten minute drive form
Arboleda. Its an attractive upmarket coastal town but manages to
conserve the traditional air of a fishermans village, and as such is
popular with the Spanish. It is an authentic seaside town but is
unspoilt by tourism, unlike much of the Spanish coast in other areas. It
is has excellent facilities with great restaurants and shops. There are
a good range of supermarkets and every Saturday morning there is a good
open air market at which youll find almost everything.
The beaches in La Rąpita (as
it is know locally) are numerous and varied, ranging from larger beaches
by the town to more secluded inlets situated on the southern side
towards Las Cases de Alcanar and beyond which offer more intimate
smaller beaches bordered with pine trees and with pretty caves.
Sant Carles de la Rąpita was
founded by King Carlos III in 1780 as a port to serve trade with the
colonies, and constructed in the neoclassical style of the period. It is
known for the production of rice and salt, and is also an important
fishing port, particularly for shellfish and shrimps. Because of the
nearby nature reserve it is also known in Spain as a quiet sanctuary for
ecotourism.
Catalonia is a Mediterranean
country with an important history going back over one thousand years, as
well as its own language and culture, which have gradually helped to
shape the national personality. |
